7 Easy DIY Crafts Using Recycled Materials

1. Tie-Dye

If you have an old white T-shirt that you wish to discard, you can simply upcycle it. For this, you will need dye colours, a bucket, gloves, and some rubber bands. Take your old T-shirt, twist it, and roll it into a spiral. Further, add rubber bands in different shapes and squirt dyes of different colours on the T-shirt.

Once this is done, add some warm water to the bucket and put your T-shirt in it. Ensure to wear gloves throughout the process to avoid staining your skin with dye. After a few hours, remove your T-shirt from the bucket and let it dry for some time(avoid drying it directly in the sun). Once it is done, your Tie-dye t-shirt will be ready!

This is a great DIY craft idea as it can help you reduce the need to throw away clothes you no longer need.

2. Glass Jar Lanterns

This is a simple activity that you can easily do. For this, all you need is a mason jar, fairy lights (or tea lights), dye or food colouring (optional), and decorative items such as glitter, sun-dried flowers, etc.

To make your own glass jar, start by adding some colours to your jars. If you wish to have a clear glass lantern, you can skip this step. Further, stick your decor items like glitter, flowers, or coloured paper to your jar. Now, you can add fairy lights or battery-operated or traditional tea lights (according to your choice).

The light will shimmer through the decoration and will give you an aesthetic and beautiful-looking lantern. This is a simple DIY craft that can easily be made by kids as well!

3. Mosaic Art

Mosaic art has a rich history which can tell you a lot about architecture. It is an image that is made out of irregular shapes. This is the best DIY craft made from recycled materials. For this, you will need broken glass pieces (you can also use old CDs or coloured paper) and glue.

First, draw out the shape of any object or thing you like, it could be as simple as drawing a duck, cake, balloon, etc.

Once, you have outlined the shape, start by sticking the tiny glass pieces but be careful to not cut yourself. If you do not have broken glass pieces, you can take coloured paper sheets and cut them into small pieces.

When you complete sticking the pieces together, you will notice how those pieces give an artistic look to your outline once they are together.

4. Pencil Stand

This is a simple DIY craft idea for kids. For this, all you need is old tin cans, coloured paper, a sketch pen, and glue.

Take any old tin can and cut open one side of it. (If this is being made by my kids, they can ask their parents to cut open the top of the tin with the help of a blade or knife). Then, measure the length, breadth, and radius of the tin and stick it on the tin with coloured paper with the help of glue.

Furthermore, you can use sketch pens to decorate your pen stand. You may add glitter, put on stickers, etc, to decorate it. Once it is done, your pencil stand will be ready, and you will be able to store some of your stationery items inside it. This is one of the most simple and easy-to-make DIY craft ideas for kids.

5. Kaleidoscope

You can make your own DIY kaleidoscope. This is a fun activity for children as well as adults. For this you will need a cardboard tube (you can use one from the toilet paper roll), 3 small mirrors that can fit into the cardboard tube, plastic wrap, tape, and coloured paper.

The first step is to wrap the coloured paper around the cardboard tube and stick it together with the help of tape.

Next, arrange the mirrors in a way that makes a triangle, and tape them together. Once this is done, fit it inside the cardboard tube.

Now, take small pieces of coloured paper and cut them into different outlines like hearts, circles, rings, and stars. Once done, wrap one side of the cardboard cube with black-coloured paper. Lastly, on the other side stick a plastic wrap and secure it with the help of tape.
